Chelsea’s left-back Ian Maatsen’s loan to Borussia Dortmund is over: the 21-year-old Dutchman successfully completed the mandatory medical check with the Westphalians on Wednesday and then signed a contract that runs until the end of the season. According to reports from England, Dortmund will pay a loan fee of between 2 million and 2.5 million euros, and a purchase option for BVB is reportedly not included in the deal. However, Maatsen previously extended his contract with the Blues until 2026 – apparently including an exit clause that should take effect from summer 2024. The loan is still subject to processing in accordance with the association regulations, as the Dortmund team announced.
Colding to Szoboszlai: The most expensive winter arrivals per Bundesliga club
The U21 national player Oranjes had already landed in Dortmund on Tuesday evening. He is supposed to solve the personnel shortage on the left defensive wing, where coach Edin Terzic only has one regular professional in new signing Ramy Bensebaini. The latter will take part in the Africa Cup of Nations with Algeria in January, another alternative, Julian Ryerson, was recently canceled due to injury. In the friendly against AZ Alkmaar last weekend, Terzic experimented with central defender Nico Schlotterbeck and two U23 players on the left side.
The 1.68 meter tall left-footed Maatsen has made a total of twelve Premier League appearances. The professional, who trained in his home country at Feyenoord and PSV, among others, managed to make the jump into the professional squad at Stamford Bridge last summer after previously going through the youth ranks at the Blues from the U18 level onwards. During his loan spells at Coventry and Burnley, he played 79 games in the Championship between 2021 and 2023, in which he scored 14 goals. During this time, Maatsen increased its market value from one to 12 million euros and increased this by another 8 million euros in the last six months.
“Due to our current personnel situation, we have decided to take action again in the left-back position in the winter. With his strengths, Ian fits our requirements profile. He is a player who has a lot of speed, has a strong left foot and can also be used in various positions. We are very pleased that we were able to realize this loan before our first Bundesliga game of the year,” said BVB sporting director Sebastian Kehl.
