The first episode of Chateau Bijstand, the Meiland family’s latest reality program, had not yet been broadcast by SBS6 or there was a fuss about it. From Arjen Lubach to RTL Boulevard and Shownieuws: everyone had something to say about the program in which the family lives on welfare for a month. Lubach called for an end to ‘fake poverty’ on television. Shownieuws mainly criticized ‘the timing’, because hello: war, energy poverty, even middle incomes now have financial problems, etcetera. In RTL-Boulevard people wondered aloud whether the Meilandjes are now past their best-before date.
