The starting signal for the autumn/winter 2024 season was given in Copenhagen in the last week of January, with the ‘big four’ – New York, London, Milan and Paris – following. In addition to the items of clothing that attract everyone’s attention on the catwalks, shoes, handbags and other accessories should not be overlooked, after all, they are the real revenue generators of many luxury brands. FashionUnited took a look at the FW23 collections to find out what they can tell us about the accessories for the coming fall season.
Bags in an oversized look
Bags appear oversized again. A prime example is the ‘XL Puzzle Tote’ from the Spanish fashion house Loewe made of light brown or black lambskin. It could be found in the brand’s FW23 collection for both women and men.
Balmain creative director Olivier Rousteing also created a similar model for the Spanish luxury fashion house’s FW23 collection: The oversized light brown bag has a structured surface.
That same season, Maximilian Davis, creative director of Italian fashion house Ferragamo, showed a classic tote in gray crocodile-embossed leather. Such models harmonize particularly well with the current one ‘Quiet Luxury’ trend.
Although ‘it bags’ from luxury brands can cost a small fortune, last year’s influencer favorite was just $135 (around 125 euros): the quilted crossbody bag from Cos, a brand of Swedish fashion group H&M Group, was made from recycled polyester. Additional bag shapes and sizes with quilted elements made of leather and denim will also be eye-catchers this season.
Faux fur bags in bright shades continue to be trendy. Georgian fashion designer David Koma’s fluffy purple FW23 model features a chain handle. The Jil Sander label also showed a clutch made of faux fur in bright blue – matching the one currently circulating ‘Mob Wife’ trend.
Both Italian luxury fashion house Bottega Veneta and Parisian label Y/Project featured denim-look printed leather in their collections. For FW23, creative director Glenn Martens complemented a look with an oversized bag made from this novel material.
Shawls and scarves
Colorful checks and Scottish-looking fabrics have been very popular in suits, kilts, scarves and shawls in recent seasons. As the perfect accessory for winter, an XXL scarf or cape can enhance the entire outfit. Large versions of the classic Stewart tartan mohair scarf from French luxury fashion house Saint Laurent are held together with a large gold pin.
For FW23, Danish designer Birgitte Raben and her label Rabens Saloner presented an oversized scarf in a green and beige checked pattern over a contrasting, also checked jacket.
Marco de Vincenzo, creative director of Italian fashion house Etro, showed a variety of oversized checked wool scarves, including bold colors such as orange, blue and green.
Coordinated looks with checkered scarves in bright colors were seen at British fashion house Burberry.
The ‘Infinity Neck’ scarf
The ‘Infinity’ knitted scarf appeared in the last winter season and will also be seen in the FW24 season. Its functionality makes it ideal for combining with hats and other clothing for the cold season.
Last fall season, British designer Christopher Kane sent a bright blue ribbed version down the runway.
A beige, ribbed model of the scarf appeared at South Korean fashion label Wooyoungmi.
The Tokyo label Mame Kurogouchi presented an even closer version that hugs the neck.
An unusual model with wider stripes was introduced by London-based label Kiko Kostadinov.
Statement belt
Statement belts are an important accessory for the upcoming fall season. They were already seen as a successful addition to numerous outfits last year.
At the Italian label Blumarine, creative director Anna Molinari showcased an extra-wide belt with various rivets, which was worn low over a simple jersey dress.
A similar style was found at New York label Vaquera, which featured a distressed cowhide leather belt with a three-pronged buckle. American brand Michael Kors showcased a double leather belt in the coffee-inspired ‘Latte’ color palette and a silver buckle.
Italian fashion house Tod’s completed an outfit with a brown leather belt with a micro patch pocket.
Upgraded baseball caps
Thanks to the American television series ‘Succession’, the simple baseball cap received a fashionable makeover. As a unisex model, it is easy to wear and completes casual outfits. Whether simple or fashionably decorated versions – they will be seen again in the FW24 season.
At Dior, womenswear creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri reinvented the classic baseball cap, creating a quilted FW23 style with a high crown.
The cap maintains traditional shapes in a pale blue denim fabric with a used effect from the luxury label Dion Lee.
The French label Victoria/Tomas staged a Sherpa version with the brand’s blue logo patch.
Among the FW23 designs from the Italian hat manufacturer Borsalino was a denim cap with a green-gray camouflage pattern.
