An era is ending in women’s handball: Buxtehuder SV has separated from its long-time coach Dirk Leun. The club got off to a miserable start to the season.

The handball Bundesliga team Buxtehuder SV has separated from its coach Dirk Leun with immediate effect. The longest-serving coach in the women’s Bundesliga is no longer responsible for the team, the club announced on Monday.

The Buxtehuder women are in second-to-last place in the table with 2:14 points and have not yet been able to record a win this season. After only two draws in seven games, the 21:30 defeat against Zwickau a week ago the end of the collaboration.

Peter Prior, manager of the BSV, pays tribute to the outgoing coach’s achievements: “We owe Dirk Leun a huge debt of gratitude. His name stands for an incredibly successful era with winning the Challenge Cup in 2010, the cup victories in 2015 and 2017 as well as three German runner-up championships. Not to forget his commitment to the Buxtehude youth and youth sector.”

Both sides have agreed not to disclose the exact reasons for the separation. However, Prior explains: “Of course, it’s not just the coach who is responsible for this. But recently, everyone involved has been growing doubts as to whether we can turn the trend together.”

Last year was already disappointing for BSV. The club will play its next game after the five-week World Cup break against HSG Bensheim/Auerbach.
