Next Wednesday, September 6, the eighteen other suspects in the case of forgery and extortion are also expected to appear in court. Donald Trump, 77, is the first to act, followed by his former lawyer Rudy Giuliani.
Trump was indicted by a grand jury on August 14. This is the fourth criminal case against Trump, who is again a candidate for the 2024 presidential election. The billionaire was previously charged with paying hush money to a porn star (in New York state), withholding secret documents (in the state Miami) and for possible election fraud plus his role in the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021 (in Washington state).
In March 2024, Trump must defend himself in federal court in Washington against four charges in the investigation into his attempt to influence the outcome of the election and his role in the storming of the Capitol by his supporters. Judge Tanya Chutkan announced this on Monday. The former president pleads not guilty to all charges.
The trial in New York for the payment of hush money to a former porn actress is also scheduled for March 2024. In Florida, he would have to answer in May for withholding secret documents.
He plans to run for the White House again next fall. His team had therefore pleaded with the court to move the election process to 2026, but Chutkan did not agree. The prosecutor’s office called for a trial in January, but that would not give Trump enough time to prepare, the judge said.
Never before has a former president in the United States been tried for a crime. Trump has denied all allegations and sees the prosecution as an attempt by his opponents to prevent him from getting back into the White House.
