Busy New Year’s Eve in hospitals, but not just by revelers

The hospitals in Brabant have had a busy New Year’s Eve. The victim of carbide shooting from Diessen succumbed in the Elisabeth-TweeSteden Hospital. A total of 45 fireworks victims were treated in hospitals in Brabant. In Tilburg and Bergen op Zoom, the most fireworks victims came in during the turn of the year, in both cases nine people.

Most of the fireworks victims who reported had eye injuries and were older than 18 years. In general, the severity of the injuries to which the firework victims had to be helped was not too bad.

Lost an eye
In the Catharina Hospital in Eindhoven, they experienced a restless New Year’s Eve due to revelers. Eight fireworks victims reported there, two of whom had to be operated on immediately because otherwise they threatened to lose their eye. In addition, three people suffered alcohol poisoning.

The Amphia Hospital in Breda was also busy with four fireworks victims and four alcohol poisonings. According to a spokesperson, this is no busier than other years. In Breda they were mainly busy with ‘ordinary’ sick people due to flu and respiratory infections.

Children victim
Two fireworks victims reported at the St. Anna Hospital in Geldrop. They were both minors, 12 and 14 years old.

While the Bravis Hospital in Bergen op Zoom had to treat the most fireworks victims in Brabant, the Bravis Hospital in Roosendaal did not report any fireworks victims at all. There were no alcohol poisonings there either. There were three alcohol abusers in Bergen op Zoom.

Fewer fireworks accidents
In the Jeroen Bosch Hospital in Den Bosch, there were many people who had to be treated for alcohol poisoning: ten in total. In addition, the emergency room treated eight fireworks victims, half of whom were minors. This also involved relatively minor injuries to the eyes and hand. A spokesperson speaks of fewer fireworks victims than last year when there was a fireworks ban. The ETZ in Tilburg received even more people with alcohol poisoning, eleven.

In Veldhoven they had the fewest partygoers in the emergency department. In the Maxima Medical Center, one firework victim reported and two people sustained alcohol poisoning. The Bernhoven Hospital in Uden received two fireworks victims. The severity of the injury was not too bad. Five people were brought in for alcohol poisoning.

With regard to drug abuse, it was relatively quiet in the various emergency departments. In Geldrop there was someone who had used too much GHB.
