They flee from Putin’s war to Berlin to be safe here. In the past few days, numerous women and children from Ukraine have reached the capital. To ensure that the little ones are well received, Berlin’s school senator wrote a letter to the teachers.
In the letter dated March 3, Astrid-Sabine Busse explains: “Dear school management, dear colleagues, (…) We are expecting many refugee children and young people in our city. The vast majority will attend our schools, in welcome classes and also in regular classes. There we will give them stability and comfort in the community.”
And further: “In Berlin we know from experience that global political conflicts unfortunately also become visible in our schoolyards and have to be dealt with pedagogically. What is important to me: children do not wage wars, no schoolchild of Russian origin may be held responsible for the crimes of the Putin regime.”
Since dealing with war and flight is “very demanding”, the teachers are given support via online consultation hours, specialist letters, online training courses and advisory services, among other things.
