About a hundred registered asylum seekers left Ter Apel for The Hague on Sunday afternoon around 1:30 PM in two buses to be received at the NH Hotel in the Kijkduin district.
The need at the registration center in Ter Apel was so great this weekend that asylum seekers were in danger of having to sleep on the grass. Due to the “very acute situation”, the municipality of The Hague announced that it would accommodate approximately one hundred to one hundred and twenty people.
According to the municipality, how many people are actually accommodated at Deltaplein depends on the influx. There are fifty to sixty rooms available for adult men, women and couples. There is no place for children. The Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) provides guidance for the group, pays the costs and is supported by the Red Cross.
The care will take place until January 15 at the latest. Local residents were informed by letter. Hart voor Den Haag announced on Saturday that it was requesting an urgent debate about the shelter. Municipal councilor Coen Bom of Hart voor Den Haag criticized the fact that local residents had no say. “It is downright scandalous that local residents are being presented with a fait accompli. Zero participation, zero consultation.”
