A burning mobility scooter has led to an evacuation of an apartment complex on Raadhuislaan in Werkendam. About sixty residents had to flee their homes due to heavy smoke development. They were taken care of at the local fire station.
The mobility scooter was in the basement of the apartment complex. The vehicle caught fire around half past seven. The fire was extinguished after half an hour. Although the size of the fire was limited, a lot of smoke was released. Reason for the fire brigade to scale up to a major fire.
To prevent smoke from the basement from moving into the rest of the apartment complex, firefighters are ventilating with large equipment. All apartments are also checked, so that residents can eventually return to their homes later in the evening. Blowing out the basement is expected to take several hours.
As far as we know, none of the residents suffered any injuries. As a precaution, an ambulance has been called so that people with any complaints can be checked immediately.
