The former farm of Jan Huisjes in Wijster was already nominated to be demolished, but a sea of flames preceded the demolition. The much-discussed farm next to the railway near Wijster burned down completely last night.
The fire at the Looveen was discovered around 2 a.m., the cause is still unknown. Firefighters had no choice but to let the empty building burn out in a controlled manner.
The former farmhouse of the Huisjes family has been the center of attention in recent years. For seventeen years, the owner and railway manager Prorail were involved in a conflict about the unguarded railway crossing to the farm and the company on the Looveen. Prorail wanted to close this level crossing, but the two parties could not agree on an alternative.
