In recent weeks, the number of burglaries has already increased by 65 percent compared to the same period in 2021 after the relaxation during the corona pandemic. And when many partygoers are away from home, the number of burglaries and theft from homes will increase further.

Lockdown periods

That is what the Burglary Monitor of insurer Interpolis predicts. “During the lockdown periods in 2020 and 2021, many people stayed at home and there was a clear decrease in the number of burglaries in the Netherlands. In 2021, the number of burglaries was 40 percent lower than in 2019. But after each relaxation of the measures, we see the number of burglaries increase again,” explains spokesperson Mireille van den Boom.

Sybren van der Velden, national project leader for Home Burglary at the National Police, also sees an increase. “In week 7, for example, we saw 485 burglaries this year compared to 374 in 2021. But that also makes sense because last year we had to deal with a curfew and now with relaxation. But we are still significantly lower than the 831 burglaries before corona.”
