Bundeswehr wants to invest 1.4 billion euros in Brandenburg

The Bundeswehr wants to significantly increase its investments in Brandenburg in the coming years.

Around 1.4 billion euros are to flow into the Brandenburg locations over the next ten years, as the Ministry of Finance in Potsdam announced in a response to a request from the CDU parliamentary group published on Monday. This does not include construction expenses. In the past five years, the federal government had invested around 110 million euros in the Bundeswehr properties in Brandenburg – excluding building maintenance.

According to the ministry, spending has fallen significantly in recent years. In 2021, Bundeswehr investments in Brandenburg, excluding construction work, amounted to 18.8 million euros. In the previous year it was 19.8 million, in 2019 it was even 24.4 million euros.

In its request, the CDU refers to the 2021 military report by the military commissioner Eva Högl (SPD), who was alarmed about the nationwide “partly desolate” condition in the barracks. According to Högl, the investment required by 2034 is almost 20 billion euros. The building authorities in the federal states are only able to implement projects of one billion euros per year with their limited staff due to complicated procedures and sometimes a lack of willingness.

According to the Ministry of Finance in Potsdam, the state of Brandenburg last year promised an increase of 20 jobs per year for the processing of buildings according to the federal building agreement – it also applies to building projects of the Bundeswehr.
