Stricter access and behavioral rules will apply in the Bundestag in the future. For example, MPs are also generally required to show their IDs at the entrance to the building.

There should also be a reliability check for guests who have registered at short notice before they enter a Bundestag building. The group of people who have to go through security checks when entering is being expanded.

Random, event-independent security checks at the entrances should be possible for holders of Bundestag ID cards who do not have to go through these checks.

The Council of Elders approved the changes on Thursday at the suggestion of Bundestag President Bärbel Bas (SPD), as the parliament announced. He thus drew the conclusions from disturbances by activists from the Last Generation group and from the investigations by the Federal Public Prosecutor General into the “Reich Citizens” scene for the formation of a domestic terrorist organization.

During a raid in this context, former AfD member of the Bundestag Birgit Malsack-Winkemann was also arrested. Therefore, the access rules for former members of the Bundestag will also be tightened.

They now have to undergo a background check before they receive an ID card for the current election period. The background checks for all those who have a Bundestag card with a validity of more than one year are to be repeated annually in the future.

Before the new rules come into force, the staff council of the Bundestag administration must first deal with them.
