Bayer 04 Leverkusen underlined their impressive early form in the Bundesliga with their third win in three games. Coach Xabi Alonso’s team beat promoted SV Darmstadt 98 5-1 (1-1) at home on Saturday and climbed to first place in the table, at least temporarily. FC Union Berlin, who will receive cup winners RB Leipzig on Sunday (5.30 p.m. / DAZN), can still go into the international break as leaders.

SC Freiburg also conceded their first defeat of the season with the surprisingly clear 0:5 (0:3) at VfB Stuttgart. After three competitive defeats in a row, Werder Bremen achieved the hoped-for liberation by beating 1. FSV Mainz 05 4-0 (1-0). FC Augsburg and VfL Bochum drew 2-2 (1-1).
