Bundesliga: Union cracks Wolfsburg and remains leaders

Status: 19.09.2022 00:01

Union Berlin’s strike duo, consisting of Jordan Siebatcheu and Sheraldo Becker, has cracked VfL Wolfsburg. Thanks to the victory, Berlin remains the leader of the Bundesliga table and ousts BVB, who temporarily passed BVB, from the top.

On Sunday (September 18th, 2022) 1. FC Union Berlin won 2-0 (0-0). Siebatcheu put the “iron” on the road to victory (55th minute) before Becker made it the final score (77th).

In addition, Timo Baumgartl, who has recovered from testicular cancer, celebrated his emotional comeback for Union Berlin and was in the starting XI. He was substituted for Paul Jaeckel in the 62nd minute to great applause.

Union starts powerfully, Wolfsburg defends

In the usual manner, the team around returnee Baumgartl started with high intensity. The Köpenicker pressed early, the offensive duo Becker and Siebatcheu put the Wolfsburg chains under pressure early on.

Own attacks were carried out with speed. And VfL was almost caught off guard early on: Janik Haberer was brilliantly staged by Christopher Trimmel, but the first chance of the game was thwarted by Wolfsburg goalkeeper Koen Casteels (1st).

Brekalo misses the lead out of nowhere

As in the first Bundesliga win of the season on Matchday 6 against Eintracht Frankfurt, VfL Wolfsburg did well in the game against the ball. The downside: their own offensive game was too static. More than half an hour had already been played before the team of “Wolves” coach Niko Kovac made it in front of the goal. Josip Brekalo narrowly missed (32′).

The game lost momentum by half-time. The accuracy of the pass left more and more to be desired, the duels became more intense. And opportunities were scarce.

Siebatcheu scores on the third try

At the start there was a parallel to the first round: Union again missed the dream start by a hair’s breadth. This time András Schäfer served Siebatcheu, whose shot narrowly missed (47′). A little later Siebatcheu missed again (49th).

But the Wolfsburgs also set an accent. Maximilian Arnold took aim and the ball whizzed past the aluminum (51′). Arnold’s direct acceptance was preceded by a quick attack with depth and few ball contacts.

However, Union Berlin then cheered. In his third personal attempt, Siebatcheu hit the net. Fellow striker Becker had run down the side and hit a sharp cross that found Siebatcheu’s forehead.

Becker uses dreamy Seguin template

And the Köpenickers stayed tuned, Wolfsburg continued to limit themselves to defending the attacks of the capital city. Which was moderately successful. Because Becker increased to 2:0.

Again, Union had managed a fantastic move. Paul Seguin lifted a ball to Becker behind the Wolfsburg chain, who took the leather with his shoulder and stayed cool in front of Casteels. The goal was checked for a possible handball, but referee Robert Schröder stuck to his decision: Goal for Union.
