As of: November 20, 2023 2:59 p.m

Bundesliga soccer team Union Berlin has to do without assistant coach Sebastian Bönig for the time being. The club announced on Monday (November 20th, 2023) that the former team captain had asked for a break for personal reasons.

Bönig has held the position since 2014 and most recently served as assistant coach under Urs Fischer, who left Köpenick last week.

No Fischer successor in sight yet

Union has not yet announced a successor for the Swiss head coach. On Monday, the interim duo Marco Grote and Marie-Louise Eta, normally responsible for the U19s, led the first team unit.

Eta is the one first female assistant coach in the history of the Bundesliga. However, it is still unclear whether she will sit on the bench alongside Grote next Saturday against FC Augsburg in the bottom team from Köpenick.
