Bundesliga top scorer after matchday 21: filling pitcher with 13 goals in front

The Bundesliga has a striker problem this season – at least as far as the top players are concerned. In the current season, with 3.23 goals per game, there have been more goals than in years and significantly more than in the other European leagues, but these are spread over several shoulders. This shows a comparison of the top scorers after the 21st matchday per season.

Niclas Füllkrug tops the rankings with 13 goals for Werder Bremen in 2022/23 – a figure that was last beaten in 2006/07 when Mario Gómez had 12 goals after 21 games en route to the championship with VfB Stuttgart. Only in 2001/02 (Márcio Amoroso, 11 goals) did the most successful striker in the Bundesliga have a poorer result in the same period of this millennium.

The trend in recent years has clearly pointed in the opposite direction. Above all, Robert Lewandowski regularly shattered the records from the past and led the goalscorers list six times after the 21st matchday since 2013/14. In the past three years he has scored at least 22 goals, in 2020/21 it was 25, almost twice as many as Füllkrug had in the current season.

After the departure of the Pole to FC Barcelona and Erling Haaland to Manchester City, the vacuum of top center forwards in the league becomes clear. With 61 goals, Bayern still provide an outstanding offensive, but with Jamal Musiala (10) only one player has a double-digit number of goals. At BVB, Sébastien Haller, who was committed as a goalkeeper, missed the entire first half of the season, while Youssoufa Moukoko was only able to show his class to a limited extent.

Anthony Modeste is currently the only striker number three for the Black and Yellows, who after 21 games for 1. FC Köln still scored 14 goals in the 2021/22 season – and would thus lead the league this season. The Frenchman has been in a slump since the summer, as has Patrik Schick (18 goals after 21 games in 2021/22), who scored only his third goal of the season for Bayer 04 Leverkusen after an injury break at the weekend. So it is that even attacking midfielders like Vincenzo Grifo (11 goals) can hope for the top scorer this year.
