He is a two-time European champion, two-time world champion and Olympic champion – and will soon be playing in the German handball Bundesliga again! French superstar Kentin Mahé has now confirmed this.
“I will definitely be moving to Germany in the Bundesliga in the summer. My move from my new club will be announced in the next few days,” announced Mahé, who recently won the European Championship title with France in Germany, on the handball podcast “First 7 “.
In the German handball upper house, the 32-year-old can already look back on 268 games (833 goals), which he played for DHC Rheinland, VfL Gummersbach, HSV Hamburg and SG Flensburg-Handewitt. In 2018, Mahé left the Federal Republic and joined the Hungarian top club KC Vezprem. He is now returning from there.
The backcourt player is still keeping quiet about the club; his former club VfL Gummersbach has been considered a likely destination since January. The Bergische HC was also considered a candidate. The “kicker” has also tried to get promoted ThSV Eisenach to Mahé.
Often only second in German handball
A move back to his native France was also an option for Mahé, “but there weren’t the offers I was hoping for,” he explained.
While Mahé became champions twice in Hungary with Vezprem and won the cup three times, he was only able to celebrate one title in Germany. In 2018 he said goodbye to Flensburg with the championship title. In 2016 and 2017 it was only enough to finish as runner-up, and Mahé lost out twice in the final of the DHB Cup.
Given the options that have been circulating so far, another title in Germany will probably be difficult to achieve, especially since the BHC and Eisenach are still worried about staying in the league. Of course, the deal is still an absolute coup for the club that is in the running for Mahé.
