Flensburg (AP) – The super series of handball players at SC Magdeburg is torn, but Bennet Wiegert remains calm. “We knew that it would hit us at some point,” said the SCM coach after the 27:30 (11:13) defeat at SG Flensburg-Handewitt on Sky TV.
The Sachsen-Anhaltiner had previously won 16 Bundesliga games in a row and remained unbeaten in a total of 28 season games across all competitions.
The defeat in their last Bundesliga match of the year ended nothing at the Magdeburg lead. With 32: 2 points, the Wiegert team remains the sovereign leader. “They already have a hand on the bowl,” said Flensburg’s playmaker Jim Gottfridsson, whose team now has 27: 7 points: “For us, these points were important for the Champions League.”
“Magdeburg remains the favorite”
Analyzing the game was not difficult for Wiegert. “We made too many mistakes,” said the 39-year-old: “You can’t afford to do that in Flensburg. Benjamin Buric did a fantastic job on that.” The keeper from Bosnia-Herzegovina fended off a total of 14 balls. For him, “our will and our defense” were the keys to victory. But also for the 31-year-old one thing is certain: “Magdeburg remains the favorite.”
Both teams started the game with an unusually large number of mistakes. The guests were the first to put off their nervousness. Right winger Pettersson scored the 10: 7 (18th) after a Kempa pass from Lukas Mertens. In the last minute of the first half, a discussion about a Magdeburg break broke out. Goalkeeper Jannick Green received a time penalty for a faulty substitution. Since Omar Ingi Magnusson was also missing because of a two-minute penalty, Flensburg used the double majority for a two-goal break.
The preliminary decision was made in the 41st minute. After the 21:16 by Mads Mensah Larsen, Flensburg’s second keeper Kevin Möller held a Magnusson seven-meter throw and Hampus Wanne extended the lead to six goals with the 22:16.
After the last games on Monday and Tuesday, the Bundesliga is taking a break due to the European Championship in Hungary and Slovakia. The restart is on the 5th / 6th February with the quarter-finals in the DHB Cup.
