Bundesliga promoted Schalke binds U19 talent Sidi Sané

Completed Pro Preparation

“You don’t like to let a good player go,” Schalke’s sports director Rouven Schröder announced in spring with a view to a possible extension of the expiring contract of U19 talent Sidi Sané. On Sunday, the newly promoted Bundesliga team reported completion and tied the 19-year-old until 2024.

The Schalke homegrown, brother of international Leroy Sané, will complete a significant part of the summer preparations in the first team. In the coming season, however, Sané is initially planned for regular appearances in the U23s. “Sidi is a great boy who, despite a few injuries in the past, has developed very well,” says Mathias Schober, director of the “Knappenschmiede”. “We’re happy that he was able to play many games in the U19s under Norbert Elgert last season. After a good season in the A youth, Sidi gets the chance to train with the pros in preparation. We are happy when young players from the Knappenschmiede are given the opportunity to present themselves to the first team. Sidi will remain with the Knappenschmiede insofar as he will gain match practice in the U23s.”

The attacker, who can be used flexibly on the flanks, made his debut for the second team in the Regionalliga West in the 1-0 win against Bonner SC last season. For the U19s, Sané made seven goals in 24 competitive games in 2021/22. The right foot had already trained regularly with the professionals of the “Knappen” in April. “We wanted to give Sidi the opportunity to get a taste of what’s going on with us,” said former coach Mike Büskens about the youngster. “We all know that his path has not been easy in recent years because he has been paved by a number of injuries. But basically he has an exciting profile.”
