Soaring stopped for the time being: Werder Bremen suffered an unexpected defeat in the Bundesliga.

Against FSV Mainz 05, the recently promoted team lost 0: 2 (0: 1) at home on the 10th matchday, Marcus Ingvartsen (36th) and Jae-Sung Lee (66th) scored for clever Mainzers.

“We don’t necessarily have to be in the lead in the first half and we were lucky in a few situations. But my boys kept their heads up,” said Mainz coach Bo Svensson.

Ducksch with high chance after 60 seconds

The Bremen team got off to a good start: Marvin Ducksch had the first opportunity after just 60 seconds, and a little later Niclas Füllkrug completed a promising counterattack (12′) too uncleanly.

Because Mainz kept creating chances, such as through Leandro Barreiro (29th), it was quite an entertaining game in front of 41,000 spectators.

However, both teams could not keep up the high initial tempo for long. In a phase when Werder actually seemed to be taking control, Ingvartsen then caught the home side ice cold. After a nice cross from Danny da Costa, the Dane headed into the Bremen goal.

He had already scored in the 1-1 draw against Leipzig a week ago. “That was a big key moment because the game was on the brink,” said Mainz coach Svensson.

Bremen with ball possession, Mainz with the goal

After conceding, Werder kept trying to increase the tempo, but found it very difficult against Mainz’s well-organized defence.

And while Bremen had more possession and waited for their chances, Mainz increasingly relied on counterattacks over time. Lee then used one of them ice-coldly from a short distance.

Werder tried everything again in the closing stages and brought in fresh attacking power in Oliver Burke and Lee Buchanan. But even these measures taken by coach Ole Werner didn’t bear fruit on what was, from Bremen’s point of view, a dreary October afternoon. “We played a reasonable first half,” said Bremen coach Werner. “We did a lot worse in the second half.”

The filling pitcher, who was last associated with the national team, only attracted attention once again: shortly before the end he picked up the yellow card for a frustration foul.
