One point from four games: The start of the season in Mainz was unsuccessful. After the 3-1 defeat against VfB Stuttgart, head coach Svensson at least sees progress in performance.
After FSV Mainz 05’s winless start, coach Bo Svensson warned against taking the situation too lightly. “The situation is serious. But more because of the performance in the first games. I can live with today’s performance. That’s the path we have to pursue,” said Svensson on Saturday after 1:3 (0:0) against VfB Stuttgart. With just one point from four games, the Mainz team started as poorly as they did three years ago, when the Dane only took over as head coach during the course of the season.
Svensson satisfied with his team’s performance
The 44-year-old Svensson was at least satisfied with his team’s performance this time. “It’s a completely different impression for me. The result is very bitter, but I can’t blame them for their performance,” said Svensson. They brought the virtues onto the pitch and defended the goal.
Svensson countered a journalist’s accusation that they had played too destructively and defensively with their previous record: “We conceded nine goals before that. The main focus was on defending that today.” Stuttgart’s Serhou Guirassy decided the game with three goals.
Svensson: “We will continue to work the same way”
The coach did not repeat the clear self-criticism that he had practiced during the week before the Stuttgart game. “We’ll continue to work the same way, regardless of whether we have one, two or four points,” said Svensson. The coach is not up for discussion at all with Mainz. Instead, the management level around board member Christian Heidel and sports director Martin Schmidt are debating whether and when the contract, which is valid until summer 2024, will be extended.
