Bundesliga: Jamal Musiala: “I’ve made a lot of tough decisions”

In the Supercup game against RB Leipzig, he was one of the most conspicuous players on the field: Jamal Musiala. In an exclusive interview with BR Sport, the FC Bayern youngster reveals his goals and what the move from England to Munich meant for him.

Jamal Musiala inspires Bayern fans. In the 5-3 win in the Supercup against RB Leipzig the 19-year-old convinced as an assist provider and goalscorer. “The way we play football is really fun, we create in the game, have a lot of the ball. It’s really good to be an offensive player at Bayern,” says Musiala in an exclusive interview with BR Sport reporter Philipp Nagel.

Musiala – Praise as additional motivation

The 19-year-old received a lot of praise for his performance in Leipzig. Trainer Julian Nagelsmann attested him “world class”, Lothar Matthäus sees the youngster as a great hope for German football. For Musiala, this recognition is additional motivation: “It’s an honor to receive such praise from people like that. For me it’s a sign to keep at it. It just pushes me to make even better games.”

Musiala has been under contract with the record champions since 2019 and showed what he was made of right from the start. At 17 years, six months and 23 days he became the youngest goalscorer in the glorious history of the record champions.

Out of the comfort zone – the move to Munich

Before moving to the Isar, Musiala played for Chelsea for many years. The decision to go to Bayern Munich was not easy for him: “I’ve often made tough decisions in my life. When I moved to Bayern, it wasn’t easy either because Chelsea was like my comfort zone. All my friends were there, we were family. I didn’t know what was in store for me comes here in Germany.”

But he also grew from this experience: “Getting out of my comfort zone at a young age made me bigger as a person.”

DFB-Elf or Three-Lions? Musiala’s “sleepless nights”

His decision whether he wanted to play for the German or English national team was also up to him “sleepless nights” prepared. Musiala has both German and English citizenship. “You really don’t know what the right decision is at that moment. You always ask yourself what’s best. I’ve thought about it for a long time.”

In the end, he chose Germany: “I feel more comfortable here”, the 19-year-old explains his decision. And further: “I think that was the right decision. I can’t go back anyway and that’s what I said to myself, no matter what decision I make – I won’t look back.”

Musiala wants to “become more dangerous”

The soccer nation of Germany is happy that Musiala wears the DFB dress. He will very likely be at the World Cup in Qatar in the winter – a dream of his will come true. But what goals is he still pursuing?

The 19-year-old has a clear answer: “I want to develop further, get more playing time, score more goals.” And he adds: “I generally want to bring my whole game forward – and become more dangerous.”
