Play in the Bundesliga is scheduled to resume this weekend. Storm “Elli” is now causing the second cancellation.
The storm “Elli” on Friday afternoon had already led to the cancellation of the Bundesliga game between FC St. Pauli and RB Leipzig scheduled for Saturday. As the DFL announced in the afternoon, the duel between SV Werder Bremen and TSG Hoffenheim, also planned for Saturday afternoon, must now be canceled.
According to the DFL, the current weather situation has led to “widespread icing and significant snow drifts in large parts of the stadium area, which do not allow the game to be played safely.” According to the stadium operator, the Weser Stadium is therefore not operational.
Werder Bremen added in a statement on its own website that the snow-covered paths to the stadium were also a decisive factor in the cancellation. The safe arrival and departure of spectators cannot be guaranteed. “The focus of this decision is the safety of all visitors to the stadium, the teams and officials, but also all the service providers who are on duty at the Weser Stadium on a match day,” explained the club.
The Bundesliga game was scheduled to kick off at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 10th. It is still unclear when the game will be played instead. The DFL wants to announce the new kick-off date “promptly”. Werder Bremen also wants to clarify in the next few days what will be done with the tickets that have already been purchased.
Of the original five games that were supposed to form the Bundesliga conference on Saturday, after the cancellations in Hamburg and Bremen, only the three duels remain between SC Freiburg and HSV, between Union Berlin and Mainz 05 and between Heidenheim and 1. FC Köln. The start of the new Bundesliga year will take place on Friday evening: Eintracht Frankfurt will host Borussia Dortmund from 8:30 p.m.
