Curious own goal in Heidenheim

In the long-distance duel for a place in the Champions League, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig showed no weaknesses. BVB won 2-0 (1-0) at 1. FC Union Berlin on matchday 24 of the Bundesliga and thus maintained fourth place in the table. One point behind is Leipzig, who ultimately won 4-1 (1-1) at VfL Bochum on Saturday. Eintracht Frankfurt also fueled their hopes of participating in the European Cup again with a 2-1 (1-0) win at 1. FC Heidenheim.
In the table cellar, 1. FSV Mainz 05 missed out on the relegation spot with a 1-1 (1-0) draw against Borussia Mönchengladbach and remains second to last. Bottom team SV Darmstadt 98 experienced a record debacle with a 0:6 (0:5) defeat against FC Augsburg.
Darmstadt 98 like a relegated team: record debacle against FC Augsburg
Newly promoted Darmstadt 98 is heading towards direct relegation after their 17th game without a win in a row. The bottom of the table lost against FC Augsburg at home 0:6 (0:5) and was whistled by their own fans during the game for their shockingly poor performance.
In front of 17,810 fans, ex-Darmstadt player Phillip Tietz (1st/84th minute) and Ermedin Demirovic (20th/29th minute) each scored twice. Fredrik Jensen (12th) and Rubén Vargas (24th) contributed the other goals to Augsburg’s well-deserved victory. Only two teams in the history of the Bundesliga have taken a 5-0 lead faster: SC Freiburg away at Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2021/22 (6-0) and the Fohlen in 1984/85 against Eintracht Braunschweig (10-0) each time 25 minutes.
At a glance: Bundesliga record games by FC Augsburg / Darmstadt 98
The Hessians’ last victory for the time being was on October 7th of the previous year. At that time we managed a 2-1 win in Augsburg. Hopes for an end to the negative series were correspondingly high. But it turned out quite differently. In the end there was the highest home defeat in Bundesliga history; the same gap in goals had only occurred in 1979, in a 7-1 defeat against VfB Stuttgart. For Augsburg it was the biggest win ever in the upper house; the Fuggerstadt team had only celebrated a 6-0 win once before in 2019 – also against VfB.
Victory at Union Berlin: BVB and Terzic get some breathing room
After a restless week, Borussia Dortmund and coach Edin Terzic defied the pressure and won an important victory in the race for another place in the Champions League. BVB won 2-0 (1-0) at Union Berlin. This means that Dortmund remain in fourth place ahead of RB Leipzig, who qualify for the premier class.
Overall, a short period of pressure before half-time was enough for the runner-up to win. Otherwise, many problems have emerged over the last few weeks. In front of 22,012 fans, Karim Adeyemi gave the guests the lead (41st minute). Ian Maatsen made the decision shortly before the end (90th).
Despite much discussion about poor performances, the 3-2 defeat against Hoffenheim last weekend remains Borussia’s only defeat this year. Next Saturday BVB travels to Bremen (6.30 p.m./Sky).
Thanks to space errors and Nkounkou: Frankfurt’s winless streak ends in Heidenheim
Eintracht Frankfurt has stopped the downward trend under coach Dino Toppmöller and achieved another win after six games without any sense of success. The Hessians won 2-1 (1-0) at 1. FC Heidenheim and, thanks to their first three-pointer since the end of January, underlined their European Cup ambitions. When they took the strange lead after an own goal from Benedikt Gimber, Frankfurt benefited from a mistake (39th minute). After the break, Niels Nkounkou increased (49′) before substitute Marvin Pieringer reduced the deficit for FCH after just under an hour.
In a game that was largely low-level and characterized by bad passes, the weakened newcomers had more control and better opportunities in front of 15,000 fans. After the exit from the Conference League and Sasa Kalajdzic’s serious knee injury, Eintracht had luck on their side this time and consolidated sixth place. After their second home defeat in a row, Heidenheim remains in the middle of the table.
RB Leipzig gains self-confidence: 4-1 at VfL Bochum
RB Leipzig has gained new courage for the difficult Champions League duel with Real Madrid. Four days before the second leg of the round of 16 in the Spanish capital, coach Marco Rose’s team achieved an impressive 4-1 (1-1) win over VfL Bochum, who were recently strong at home. After a poor start to the year so far, the guests lived up to their role as favorites and remain on the heels of fourth-placed Dortmund, just one point behind. In front of 24,200 fans in the Vonovia Ruhrstadion, Dani Olmo (30th minute), Loïs Openda (68th), Ivan Ordets (own goal/71st) and Yussuf Poulsen (72nd) ensured the guests deserved victory.
In contrast, VfL, who had defeated FC Bayern at the same venue two weeks ago and could hope for another coup after Maximilian Wittek’s early goal (3rd), suffered a setback for the first time after eight home games without defeat. The red card for Moritz-Broni Kwarteng in the 86th minute after a serious foul increased the frustration.

Mainz 05 are stuck in the bottom of the table: only 1-1 against Gladbach
The motivational art of the cheerful coach Bo Henriksen was not enough for the second win of his term at 1. FSV Mainz 05. The penultimate team had to be content with a 1-1 (1-0) draw against Borussia Mönchengladbach. The hope of pushing 1. FC Köln out of the relegation zone in the relegation battle had to at least be postponed.
In front of 33,305 fans in the sold-out Mewa Arena, Jonathan Burkardt (12th minute) put the hosts in the lead. Nathan Ngoumou scored the equalizer (55th). With the draw, Gladbach have now gone nine away games without a win.
