Union Berlin suffered its tenth competitive defeat in a row when it lost 2-0 (0-1) at Werder Bremen on Saturday (October 28, 2023) and remains stuck in the Bundesliga relegation battle.
For Bremen, however, it was their first win after three previous defeats. An own goal from Robin Knoche (38th) put the Werder team on the road to victory, Marvin Ducksch (75th) made the final score. Union also had to accept a red card against Rani Khedira (60th).
With this success, SVW easily escaped from the bottom of the table and is now in twelfth place with nine points. Three points behind, Union initially remains in 15th place, but could still fall into relegation place over the course of the match day. This means that the discussions about FCU coach Urs Fischer are likely to gain further momentum. So far, however, nothing from the club’s environment indicates that the Swiss will be fired.
Own goal helps Werder
The spectators in the Weserstadion initially saw a balanced start to the game. While Union had a little more power to score, Bremen had a slight advantage in possession. Neither team had any great chances in the first 20 minutes. As the game went on, the hosts became a little more dangerous – but too often the Green-Whites’ final pass didn’t go right.
So a standard and a Berlin player had to help: After a free kick from half left, Knoche unfortunately headed the ball into his own net. Werder’s lead was well deserved because the hosts were now the more active team. Union, on the other hand, had problems moving forward in a structured offensive manner. Before the break, Berlin no longer managed to get dangerously close to the SVW box.
Dream goal from Duksch brings the decision
After the break, virtually nothing happened for 15 minutes – until Khedira Romano hit Schmid with his outstretched leg at chest height and rightly had to leave the field early. When they were outnumbered, the task became even more difficult for Berlin, especially because Werder confidently defended all attempts at attack.
An absolute dream goal made the decision: After a long pass from Milos Veljkovic, Ducksch took the ball out of the air with the first contact and lobbed it into the net over Union goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow with the second. There was no longer anyone in the stadium who supported Werder. Union never recovered from this new blow to the neck, but showed clearly too little offensively throughout the game.
