‘I would stay’. This was the song with which the Tilburg Krezip broke through in 2000. The face and sound of this band has been Jacqueline Govaert for more than 25 years. This Monday evening she was awarded the Buma Lifetime Achievement Award for this.
And that while her music career and that of her band members don’t seem to come to an end. Enough inspiration, it seems, even after a quarter of a century making music.
It was no surprise for the 43-year-old Jacqueline that she received the prize in the International Theater Amsterdam. There was a huge surprise with her when Krezip colleague Annelies Kuijsters recently overturned her with the news in a broadcast by RTL Boulevard. The prize is a recognition for her permanent contribution to Dutch pop music and its role as an artistic compass for a whole generation of music lovers and makers, it sounds officially.
During the Buma Awards Gala, composers, lyricists and their music publishers are honored in various categories. Jacqueline Govaert was one of the many artists that were distinguished. And there, ‘despite’ her age, there was every reason for that. “She is still young for a Lifetime Achievement Award, but it is lengthening her,” explained director Frank Helmink of Buma Cultuur.
The former student of the Rock Academy in Tilburg therefore has a career to tell you. In 1997 she was at the basis of Krezip as a 15-year-old. It is not just a thirteen school band in a dozen, it soon becomes clear. Krezip, which also includes Jacqueline’s sister Anne, proves in 2000 with the pop classic I would stay. It comes to number 1 in the Dutch Top 40 and the Mega Top 50. The single also occupies the highest position in two charts in Belgium. The song is later named best Dutch single by 3FM by the listeners of 3FM. And in 2000 it is loudly sung during Krezips debut on Pinkpop.
I would stay Is just one of the many hits. The number is succeeded by hits like Out of my bed,, ” All My Life,, ” Lost Without You and Sweet Goodbyes. With the latter single, the collaboration will come to an end in 2009. Jacqueline goes her own way. Solo, but also with Thé Lau, Douwe Bob and Danny Vera, among others.
In 2019 the band will come together again. Krezip celebrates the return with a big hit (Lost Without You) And this summer the formation, almost as usual, is on … Pinkpop. And at the end of this year there is an anniversary show in the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam.
