Bullet through the church: Koggenland still buys tiny houses, made of waste plastic

Several municipalities were enthusiastic about the circular sustainable tiny houses, made from waste plastic, but that was only words. Today, the municipality of Koggenland signed a contract for the purchase of five of these small houses.

The circular tiny houses were invented by Edwin ter Velde. His goal? To offer a sustainable solution to the housing shortage, which at the same time contributes to the social issue of people with a distance to the labor market.

“The houses are made from the contents of your rubbish bin”, says Edwin ter Velde proudly. “And put together by people with a distance to the labor market.”

For and through the city

For a long time there was little enthusiasm from municipalities for actually purchasing the houses. For example, there were uncertainties about what destination the houses would get and there was a scarcity of land.

But now that five have been purchased by the municipality of Koggenland, production has started again, according to Ter Velde. It is not yet certain when the houses will be installed. The municipality still has to grant temporary permits for the residential land.

But Ter Velde sees it positively. “As far as I’m concerned, we’re going to start several factories. Our goal is to set up such a factory in every city where this issue arises. Not for our own glory, but precisely for and by the city.”
