Borissov, 62, is the leader of the center-right GERB party and has led three governments. He was prime minister until May last year. In the preceding period, thousands of Bulgarians took to the streets to demonstrate against his government over corruption that would enrich themselves for oligarchs. Borissov has always denied the persistent allegations.
In addition to Borrisov, former finance minister Vladislav Goranov and the former government communications adviser have been arrested, the ministry said. It reports that the large-scale operation is linked to 120 cases of the EPPO. According to Bulgarian media, this involves misuse of all kinds of EU funds.
“No one is above the law,” Prime Minister Kiril Petkov wrote on Facebook.
