Anyone who was in the Alkmaarderhout on Liberation Day could see how it arose: an enormous Waagtoren made of cardboard. The tower is a joint project for and by Alkmaarders. That ‘together’ was the theme at the Alkmaar liberation party.
It Liberation Festival in Alkmaar this year was different than before. The 5 May Committee Alkmaar stopped organizing last year. DOSS Events decided to keep the party smaller, at least for this year. No stage with bands and catering, but a more pleasant program including the construction of a huge cardboard Waagtoren.
For the 26 meter high tower, no less than 1300 cardboard boxes and 26 kilometers of tape were needed. All in all, the colossus weighed around 1000 kilograms. The preparations already started last week. On Liberation Day it was built in the Hout with many hands and felled again today.
Media partner Alkmaar Central followed the construction and also saw how the tower collapsed again under loud cheers.
