Building houses in a factory: ‘We also give our children a house’

This year 100 houses will be built in a factory hall in Klundert. The idea is somewhat copied from a car factory where the parts are put together and then roll off the assembly line as a complete car. Walls from a factory were already known, but Homes Factory builds complete apartments or floors. These huge ‘Lego blocks’ are clicked together where the house should be.

The factory hall in Klundert is completely filled with 20 large ‘building blocks’ measuring 6.3 by 15 metres. These are the maximum dimensions that can still be transported by road.

Susanne Swinkels is commercial director of the Homes Factory company in Klundert. According to her, they have the ideal way to tackle the housing shortage. “Our way is much faster, cheaper and more sustainable than the traditional way of building.” The first 8 houses of the company are already in Prinsenbeek.

“We wish our children that they also have affordable and good homes.”

The ‘Lego blocks’ are made indoors by construction workers, without being affected by wind and weather. This concerns completely finished apartments or parts of houses.

“They are completely finished here with kitchen, bathroom and, if desired, already tiled. The architects themselves determine the design and which materials they use.” They are ready within eight weeks and then they are transported to their destination on trucks.

In Breda alone, no fewer than 6000 new homes are to be built in the next four years. The need for houses is so great that it is no longer affordable for starters and people with a low or middle income.

Susanne Swinkels: “I can’t bear the fact that you can now only buy a house with a big wallet. All seven initiators of Homes Factory are older than 50 and we wish our children that they also have affordable and good houses.”

Her ambitions are great. “It is going fantastic. This year we are building 100 homes, next year this will be 300 and we want only 750 to 1000 per year as soon as possible. The capacity of the factory will also increase. From now 20 homes in 8 weeks to 30 to 40 homes next year.”

“You will soon be able to buy a house on the furniture boulevard in Breda.”

now sitting Homes Factory still in Klundert, but there are plans to move to Breda. “We would like to build a new factory on the furniture boulevard in Breda. It will then be the only furniture boulevard where you can also buy a house,” laughs Susanne.

In Breda, the municipality now also wants to build many temporary houses to alleviate the housing shortage. The company in Klundert can also play a role in this.

“Our homes can last 50 to 100 years, but they are also suitable for temporary use. You can also take them apart and reuse them. You can then also turn a few apartments into one single-family home,” explains Swinkels.

The houses are sold with a deposit. So when the houses are no longer needed, Homes Factory comes to collect them and the customers get that amount refunded to their account.

Saturday is Construction Day, during which the houses in Prinsenbeek can also be viewed from the outside.
