Building collapses during major fire in the center of Boxmeer

A very large fire raged in an empty shop on Steenstraat in Boxmeer on Thursday evening. An area around the seat of the fire has been cordoned off by the police because there may be asbestos in the building. Images show that the back of the building has collapsed.

The fire broke out around 8 a.m. Around ten o’clock no more high fire could be seen. There was rather a risk that the fire would spread to adjacent buildings, the fire service reported to Omroep Brabant. That is why it was quickly scaled up to ‘very large fire’. The Steenstraat is located in the middle of the shopping area in the center of Boxmeer.

Lots of views
The building had been empty for some time. The building used to house a cigar factory (van Dartel) and later a furniture store (Hoogland).

The fire attracts a lot of attention. Dozens of people are watching on the street, others from a distance because the fire released a lot of smoke.

The fire brigade is present with several fire trucks and an aerial platform.
