Build sustainably with 3D printing

“The exciting thing about this material is that it can be reinserted into the biological cycle. It can be industrially composted, but it can also be melted back into granules and used for the next 3D print,” says Anna Prell, an architecture master’s student at TH Lübeck, about the research pavilion that she designed together with fellow student Dalila Torres. The pavilion is part of the more than 400 square meter presentation area of ​​the Civil Engineering department at NordBau 2022.

In the 2021/2022 winter semester, under the direction of TH Lübeck professors Michael Hermann and Benjamin Spaeth, they began to produce models for a research pavilion in the “Digital Design and Construction” module. The focus topics were the circular economy in construction and digital process chains – i.e. a digital chain that links all the steps in the construction process. When developing their concepts, the students concentrated on innovative computer-based design and simulation methods in order to design efficient and therefore sustainable constructions. This resulted in seven different designs for a research pavilion. Three of the designs were selected by a specialist jury and further developed in the summer semester of 2022 in interdisciplinary cooperation with master’s students in civil engineering. But only one design made it into the final selection: the pavilion by Anna Prell and Dalila Torres.
