The commemoration of forty years of uninterrupted democratic process finds us as witnesses of the rise of Javier Milei. The arrival of the libertarian generates expectations in those citizens convinced of the impossibility of sustaining a status quo that is increasingly harmful for a growing number of Argentines. At the same time, it also raises questions about the effective capacity to manage the multiple demands of an impoverished society fatigued by such a complex economic crisis that, if mistakes are made in the coming hours, could lead to chaotic scenarios.
Part of the construction of governability will be played in Congress, which will require a proactive attitude on the part of the President’s political team to achieve support at key moments. However, another fundamental part of this effort forces Milei to reconstitute a weakened, almost liquefied, presidential authority in this latest Kirchner administration. In a presidential system as unique as ours, it is essential that the head of the Executive Branch exercises power and has real and manifest influence, so that the entire political system is organized around him, including the opposition. In fact, from what the libertarian economist does in his early days we can draw some more accurate conclusions about the construction of his leadership and his decision-making method.
At the same time that it must seek to consolidate a governance scheme that ensures effective use of power, much of the fate that awaits Milei will depend on the effective management of the economic crisis. Even with all the difficulties of the case, the opportunity is presented to be able to rediscover ourselves with a new scheme that ensures stability and that allows for a reversal of Argentina’s long decline, resuming the path of growth with inclusion and from a pragmatic and realistic view of what we can undoubtedly become.
