“The Serie Good Argentine Mustaches was born from the daguerreotype of General José de San Martín, from the year 1848. It was a portrait that I had pending and when I decided to paint it Charlie Garcia, these two characters were united, in my head, by the mustache. That day I came up with the concept and started working on it. I remember, at the beginning of 2023, having asked my followers to suggest good Argentinians and who, when I remember them, have a mustache. I already had Piazzollasoon the list had grown too long and I had to choose,” he recalled. Juan Rivierean Argentine artist who stood out in fairs and galleries, who in mid-January participated in the renowned Salon d’Automne, the current exhibition with the most history in France.
Picasso, Matisse, among other greats of painting, they were part of the editions of the Paris exhibition and, within the environment of the art market, the event is considered the springboard of international recognition. “Matisse, Renoir, Bourdelle, Rodin, Cezzane, Picabia, Foujita, Picasso and many more that escape me at this moment, have managed to shine in this Hall. There in 1905 the “Fauvism”pictorial movement originated in the third edition of the Salon d’Automne, given the criticism of “The feuves”for the provocative use of color,” explained the Buenos Aires painter, originally from Lapridain dialogue with NEWS.
Although the Buenos Argentinos Bigotes series is on an international tour, the pictorial collection has not yet been concluded. Riviere anticipated: “The series is not finished yet, so some more from that list may be the work. To those completed “Astor, dear”, “Charly”, “José de San Martín”, “San Artémides Zatti” and “Sábato painter”, will soon be added “Don Ricardo”, which is a portrait of the former president Raúl Ricardo Alfonsín, which I am currently working on. For now there are six, but there are big good mustaches for this series to continue growing.”
The return of Grand Jury of the Salon d’Automne I congratulate “the great quality of the artistic work” of the Argentine painter. However, for Riviere the first return is the one that marked him, the artist expressed: “The first return was the one that I remember the most: “je trouve cela trés intéressant” (I find it very interesting) by a great French colleague who “He came over to take a photo of Piazzolla while he appreciated the lines in the work.”
“Being able to paint the portrait of a hero in the era of artificial intelligence, for me is wonderful, it is tradition and at the same time current, it has a lot of value. The detail on the flap of the Saint Martin’s overcoat speaks for itself. In almost all cases the choice of the indicated figure has to do with the moment, with a particular date or with a historical event. Currently, and in parallel with the series Good Argentine MustachesI’m working on a portrait of Domingo Faustino Sarmiento”, highlighted the Buenos Aires artist.
“Always starting by thinking about a main color, and generally, a color that doesn’t go where it should. With that freedom I imagine the work on the canvas, and most of the time the portraits end up as I had thought them. Some of them, I modify them as I work and realizing that there is another possibility that can provide a better final result,” Riviere explained with his working method and recalled: “I always remember a pleasant discussion with my teacher, Washington Riviere, the day of my first class. He had everything ready for a still life, that same Wednesday, July 31, I made my first portrait with pastel and charcoal. Sometimes, I think that this was not the beginning, although it was the professional beginning, which allowed me to discover the nobility of painting, the power and freedom of expression.”
