We asked the plastic surgery specialist at Siluet Hospital From Timo Pakkasenwhat does he think about the buccal fat removal beauty procedure.
– Let’s say this is not a particularly good measure for the Finnish population.

Pakkanen says that fat removal is generally not recommended if the soft tissue of the cheek is not particularly heavy.

Cheek liposuction is a short-term surgical procedure that is performed in the operating room under local anesthesia or anesthesia.
Pakkanen recommends the procedure only for people who, due to the plump shape of the cheek, can really benefit from fat removal. The specialist in plastic surgery says that such a situation is quite rare.
Risks:
All surgeries have risks. And that’s why no surgery should be done for nothing. There must always be good reasons for operations.
In the procedure, excess cheek fat is mechanically removed through an incision made on the side of the mucous membrane. Because of this, for example, the salivary gland ducts can be damaged during the operation.
There is also a small risk of infection, because there are always bacteria in the mouth, and the mouth cannot be sterilized for surgery.
Recovery:
A wound on the buccal mucosa usually heals in a few days. Bruising or swelling may occur with the procedure. These can be seen on the face for about two weeks. However, recovery is always individual.
Cheek liposuction is not a popular procedure in Finland
Pakkanen says that cheek liposuction is a common procedure in some ethnic groups.
– Correcting the shape of the cheek is popular, for example, in South Korea, due to the wider face shape of Asians.
According to Pakkanen, cheek liposuctions have been performed at Siluet Hospital in the last 20 years, and the demand has not changed much recently.
