The streets of Sitges (Barcelona) experienced two homophobic attacks on New Year’s Eve in which four people were injured, as denounced this Wednesday by the association Colors Sitges Link. The brutal attack took place on Joan Tarrida street, and in it the victims were punched and kicked shouting “faggot”. The local police of this town appeared in the area and identified three minors as the alleged perpetrators of the attack.

Around six in the morning on January 1, a group of minors shouted into Joan Tarrida street, in the gay area of the municipality, and began to beat and punch the people who were outside the bar. The victims were treated at the Sant Camil hospital and presented various injuries to the head, ear and neck, as a result of the blows they received. After being examined by doctors, they were discharged and are at their homes. The local police continue to investigate the event to locate the rest of the still unidentified people who participated in the attacks.

Municipal sources assured this newspaper that when the agents finish the investigations, the results will be reported to the Mossos d’Esquadra. The Generalitat police, upon learning of the attack, reported it, as established by protocol, to the hate and discrimination service of the prosecutor’s office. This Thursday, the mayoress of Sitges, Aurora Carbonell, met with the victims of the attack and those responsible for the local police to assess the facts, as reported by the Sitges Colors association. The consistory announces that she intends to appear as an accusation in the judicial process that is opened in the courts to investigate what happened.
In a statement, the city council condemns the attack and highlights that Sitges is a population “that wants to have zero tolerance for these LGTBIQ+phobic behaviors.” Likewise, it reiterates its commitment to the fight against “any type of discrimination or attack” against this group and expresses “its will to put an end to these behaviors.”

The Observatory against Homophobia, for its part, has also shown its “absolute condemnation” of homophobic aggression and has brought it to the attention of the Sindic de Greuges, which, according to this entity, has also opened an ex officio investigation. This is not the only homophobic attack that took place in the province of Barcelona on New Year’s Eve, since, during the early hours of the morning, the Mossos d’Esquadra arrested three men and a woman at the Plaza Catalunya Renfe station for allegedly committing a homophobic assault against two men in a train carriage. The two victims were punched and kicked and threatened with glass bottles while yelling homophobic insults at them. In this case, the four attackers were arrested and brought to justice.
