Because Mercedes has not been doing Formula 1 for a long time, there is currently speculation that Lewis Hamilton will switch to Ferrari. Ex-F1 driver Martin Brundle has now poured fuel on the fire. The TV expert thinks he knows how the Silver Arrow pilot is currently thinking.
Lewis Hamilton faces an uncertain future: the Mercedes driver can apparently bury his world title plans with this year’s car, the Brit’s contract expires at the end of the year. So is Hamilton looking for a new challenge within Formula 1, maybe even at Ferrari?
The former F1 driver and today’s TV expert Martin Brundle believes that the 38-year-old would dare to take the step, even if there are currently more arguments for staying with the German Formula 1 racing team.
“I think if we look at the big picture […]there are many good reasons to stay with Mercedes,” Brundle told Sky Sports F1 about Hamilton. “You just have to tell him how you want to do it,” Brundle added, referring to the current problems in the formula 1 and the open contract question.
A change is still conceivable. Many world-famous F1 drivers would have reoriented themselves within their careers.
“[Ayrton] Senna left McLaren and went to Williams, [Michael] Schumacher went to Ferrari, it took a long time though [er] did it,” Brundle said.
“These great riders aren’t afraid to go somewhere and then gather a bunch of new people around and make a difference,” added the 1992 World Championship sixth.
Brundle: That’s what Hamilton is thinking right now
Hamilton himself had repeatedly flirted with a move to the Scuderia, but according to his own statement the whole thing had never happened – at least so far!
Will that change in 2024? “There has to be a part of Lewis that says, ‘I would like to go to Ferrari, do the same as Michael Schumacher and make the team a team that wins the World Cup again,’ Brundle said, looking at the situation at Mercedes added: “If I can’t win my eighth or ninth title now, why don’t I go there and have some fun?”
Brundle is sure that these questions are wafting through Hamilton’s mind and that he is discussing this possibility with his father and management.
In any case, the thoughts of Ferrari are “due to the miserable performance of the [Mercedes]-Cars in Bahrain” have definitely “been tightened up”, suspected the 63-year-old. Hamilton only finished fifth at the start of the season, far behind the top Red Bull duo.
