Bruges will soften approximately 4 hectares

At the moment they are also softening an extra section at the back of Bruges station. When it was built in 2014, that place was called ‘The ugliest square in Europe’ by many Bruges residents because of the amount of gray concrete. Recently, a section has already been paved and flower beds have been laid out. Now they are tackling an extra piece and the concrete is making way for planting. (continue reading below the photo)

Mercedes Van Volcem, alderman of Public Domain Bruges: “Green in a city is very important. You have healthy air, people like it. You bring color to the area, especially in the summer. This year we are going to soften 4 hectares, also in the boroughs. And people actually find that very pleasant. Those stone plains, they are from previous centuries.”
