Bruges places 400 extra green chairs, despite vandalism

The green chairs have become an indispensable part of Bruges’ streetscape. That is why Bruges will place another 700 this year, 400 of which today. The chairs have been in Bruges parks and squares for three years now. “I got inspiration in New York and Paris. The green chairs provide a hip touch in a historic environment,” says alderman of Public Domain Mercedes Van Volcem.

“They give people the chance to enjoy themselves and have a chat.” But the seating is also popular with vandals or thieves. Since the start of the project, at least 200 of those chairs have been damaged or stolen.
