Bruges is thinking of forming a district instead of a merger
He cites the example of Antwerp: the municipalities that join such a district will then have a district council and district mayor.
Where they are therefore moving towards a merger in Wingene and Ruiselede, Bruges mayor Dirk De fauw sees it differently: a district. The Bruges region will then speak with one voice, but the municipalities that participate will keep their own name. In this case it could be Damme, Oostkamp, Beernem, Zedelgem, Jabbeke and Zuienkerke. The separate municipalities each have their own district council with a district mayor.
This construction may have greater support than a merger. The more so because De fauw only looks at municipalities with CD&V mayors, so everything would remain within its own party.
