Bruges has a plan ready for what the city wants to look like in 2050

The plan is a translation of the Flemish concrete stop or construction shift. It must ensure that the public space in the city is used as efficiently as possible. Alderman for spatial planning Franky Demon: “We want to work with plans. When people, schools or companies apply for a building permit, we want to do so according to a structured plan. And that plan is now ready. We are conducting a public inquiry and listening to the people to make any adjustments.”

2050 is still a long way off

For example, the plan states that space that is not intended for construction must remain that way. So it will have to be built closer together. “I am thinking of the core city, I am thinking of Sint-Andries, Sint-Michiels where we should be able to build a little closer, but other things such as the north, such as Dudzele, Lissewege, but also far-Assebroek, where the plan states that we cannot become more dense.”

There is also room for development in the future plan. To this end, the city is looking at the station area, Zeebrugge and the Lanssens site (simulation) at the quay district. The Spatial Policy Plan will be presented to all citizens of Bruges at information moments and it can still be adjusted, because 2050 is still a long way off.

“2050 seems far away, but we want to give business a chance in our city. And it sometimes takes many years to develop everything. So it’s good that we have a plan. Flanders asks and Bruges will be ready.”
