Bruges Capuchin Monastery gets a new meaning

The Capuchin Monastery with accompanying church and garden has been under the management of Tourism Flanders since December 2021 and, like Saint Godelieve Abbey, will be revalued and made accessible to tourists.

In the future plan, the Kapucijnenkerk will become a meeting place for events, among other things. The former sleeping quarters of the monastery become a boarding school that is made available during the holiday periods for youth and group accommodations. The garden is renamed the Franciscus Garden and becomes an open courtyard and a creative breeding ground.

Open Monument Day

In the prayer chapel and the library of the monastery, space is provided for local organizations and social associations. “Today we are proud to be able to present the possible future of the Capuchin Monastery together with all partners involved”, says Flemish Minister of Tourism Zuhal Demir (N-VA). “But the search for a substantive strong future scenario is of course only one element. We must ensure that the future plans are also economically feasible. I provide sufficient investment resources through Tourism Flanders. But I would also like to make a warm appeal to entrepreneurs to participate. invest in this unique religious heritage gem.”

This weekend is Open Monument Day, when the public can get acquainted with the new plans. The program includes storytellers, lectures, concerts and choral singing.
