Bruges belfry has a new caretaker
No fewer than 42 people applied to take care of the most famous building in Bruges. Understandable, because the view from the caretaker’s house on the Markt is unique. From now on, Benito will be responsible for the security and maintenance of the building around the clock. “I applied because I thought it would be a very nice job to be able to take care of such an important historic building. With my interest in old buildings, it seemed predestined. You shouldn’t throw parties here either. The responsibility is there with me and I will certainly take it seriously.”

The Belfry with the 83 meter high Halletoren dates from the 13th century and is recognized as Unesco World Heritage. The apartment on the first floor, which opens onto the Markt, was Frank’s home for 33 years. He is now moving to Assebroek with his wife. Frank Devos: “That is the most beautiful apartment in all of Bruges, I would even say in all of Flanders to live in. It’s mixed feelings at the moment. I have both joy and sadness. Because I leave my daughter here. But now I can also enjoy my old age.”
The contract as caretaker is of indefinite duration. Only with major restoration works will Benito have to look for another home for a while.
