Gijs Brouwer failed to qualify for the main tournament of the Libéma Open in Rosmalen. The 26-year-old Dutchman narrowly lost to Italian Andreas Seppi in the second and final qualifying round on Monday with 5-7, 7-6 (5) and 3-6.
A win for Brouwer would have been a surprise. He occupies 230th place in the world ranking. Seppi is the global number 141, but was once eighteenth.
Due to the elimination of Brouwer, there are five Dutch men in the main tournament. Botic van de Zandschulp and Tallon Griekenpoor were admitted directly, Tim van Rijthoven, Jesper de Jong and Robin Haase received a wildcard.
The last qualifying games were moved from Sunday to Monday due to the rain. The main tournament also started on Monday morning.
Again, however, rain seems to be disrupting the schedule. Suzan Lamens’ match in the first round was forced to stop in the second set. At that time she trailed 6-7 (5) and 2-4 against the Russian Anna Kalinskaya.
Lamens and Arianne Hartono are the only Dutch participants in the main tournament among the women. Arantxa Rus decided to skip the grass season this year and will therefore not be in action.
