Natalee Holloway’s brother has said he doesn’t believe the excuses made by his sister’s killer. Joran van der Sloot (36) confessed this week to the murder of Natalee (then 18), eighteen years after her disappearance. The Dutchman also apologized to the family of his victim.
Van der Sloot made his confession during a trial in the American state of Alabama, where Natalee’s relatives were also present. In an audio clip you can hear how he tells in a chillingly cool way how he smashed Natalee’s head with a concrete block on a beach in Aruba in 2005.

The killer also apologized in court, both to Holloway’s relatives and to his own family. He said he hoped “his statement would provide some kind of closure,” according to US media. “I am no longer the person I was then. I have given my life to Jesus Christ.”
Natalee’s brother was not impressed. As he left the courtroom, Matt Holloway said he does not believe Joran van der Sloot’s apology or his statement that he is now a born-again Christian. “He’s been a liar all his life,” he said. “That’s what he is: a psychopathic liar. That’s why I don’t attach too much importance to what he says. I do believe his confession. We’ve waited so long for that. That he would admit it. But all his confessions he made all for himself.”
Van der Sloot made a deal with the American justice system: in exchange for a guilty plea and information about Natalee’s disappearance, he received a relatively favorable sentence for extorting Holloway’s family: ‘only’ 20 years in prison. He demanded money from the family in exchange for information about Natalee’s fate.
Lie detector
He previously told other versions of his story. That Natalee had become unwell and died, and that her body was hidden in the foundation of a house. This time, both the judge and the FBI believe what he says. After all, he also passed a lie detector test.
Van der Sloot will be in a Peruvian cell until at least 2045 for the murder of Stephany Flores in Peru in 2010 and for drug trafficking from prison. His 20-year prison sentence runs concurrently with the years he still has to serve in Peru. In the coming days he will be flown back to Peru from Alabama.
According to Matt Holloway, Joran van der Sloot should not claim victory too early. “He forgot one thing and that’s me. He will see me again when he thinks he is a free man.”
