Broken weir in Lith ensures that Maas water cannot flow away as quickly

Due to a broken part of the weir in Lith, the water from the Maas flows less quickly to the sea. As a result, the already high water level is higher than would otherwise be the case.

A spokesperson for Rijkswaterstaat explains that the weir in Lith has three gates. These can be opened in the event of high water to speed up drainage to the sea. Two of the three are working. One slide can no longer open due to a technical malfunction. Rijkswaterstaat employees are working on a solution. According to the spokesperson, this may take some time.

The amount of water that comes from Limburg through the Maas to Brabant is exceptionally high on Thursday and Friday. These days, 1700 to 1800 cubic meters of water per second flow through the river near Maastricht. The water takes two to three days to arrive in Lith. Due to rainfall in the Meuse catchment area, the water level has become even higher. This means that areas around the Maas are more likely to flood.

During dry periods, a dam is closed to keep the water in an area for longer.
