“They were white boys, but they loved hip-hop. To me, that was what separated them from the Backstreet Boys.”
In her memoir “The Woman In Me,” published on October 24, Britney Spears also reflects on many situations surrounding her former relationship with Justin Timberlake. For example, she also remembers how his band *NSYNC tried to adapt more to the style of black artists.
In her book, the singer explicitly recounts a moment when she noticed how hard Timberlake and his group were trying to better fit into the hip-hop world: “*NSYNC was what people called “pimp” back then. They were white boys, but they loved hip hop. For me, that was what differentiated them from the Backstreet Boys, who seemed to consciously position themselves as a white group.”
And further: “*NSYNC hung out with black artists. Sometimes I thought they were trying too hard to fit in. One day J (Justin Timberlake) and I were in New York and went to parts of the city that I had never been to before. On our way we ran into a guy with a huge, shiny medallion. He was flanked by two tall security guards. J was very excited and said loudly: ‘Ginuwine! What’s up, homie?'”
This moment caused a stir, especially on social media, as Michelle Williams, spokesperson for Britney Spears’ book, also tried to imitate Timberlake’s artificially relaxed manner. The actress took on the voice role for “The Woman In Me” because Spears didn’t want to relive the many emotional moments of her book and therefore her life.
Timberlake has played a prominent role in many of the pop singer’s recent revelations. Among other things, Spears also reported that she had an abortion after she became pregnant by the *NSYNC member and that the separation weighed on her for months.
