British retail sales are down again

British retail sales were down again in March. Revenues fell by 1.4 percent month-on-month, the statistics office ONS said on Friday in London. On average, analysts had expected a decline, but had only assumed a damper of 0.3 percent.

In addition, sales development in February was weaker than previously known. The Statistics Office revised the month-on-month decline to 0.5 percent after previously reporting a 0.3 percent setback.

The year-on-year development was also disappointing. In this regard, the statistics office reported growth of 0.9 percent for March, while analysts had expected a sales increase of 2.8 percent. (dpa)
