British retail continues to perform poorly

British retail surprisingly suffered another setback in October. In a month-on-month comparison, the industry’s revenue fell by 0.3 percent, as the ONS statistics office announced on Friday in London. Analysts were surprised by the weak development. On average, they expected an increase of 0.4 percent.

In addition, the decline in sales in the previous month of September was greater than previously known, as revised data from the statistics office show. According to this, there was a month-on-month decline of 1.1 percent, after only a setback of 0.9 percent had previously been reported.

In a year-on-year comparison, the statistics office reported a decline of 2.7 percent for October. Sales fell particularly sharply in the textile and household goods business. (dpa)
